THEY SAY WE ARE DIFFERENT

THEY SAY WE ARE DIFFERENT

They say we are different,
But are we? Are we simply
more resilient, and a little
more thick skinned than the rest
of the kids? Sometimes, Papa,
I wonder what made us
this way- was it the nights
we got a whip when
what we needed was a hug, or
was it the insults we heard
a little more often than
the much needed ‘I love you’s … they say
we are strong, that love
doesn’t catch us easily, and that
we never cry, that life can’t break us–
they say they wish
that they were like us, but do they?
I don’t think they’d still want to be like us
if the first lesson they’d have to learn about love languages
would be a drunk father rewarding a waiting wife
with a punch when he comes home each night-
Papa, is that why we are different,
is it because of what you did to mama-
did it make us “strong” , Papa?

So many children grow up in abusive homes seeing a false image of love-we unknowingly assume that these are the “unbreakable” people who don’t get swayed by emotion when in fact they’re really just children that didn’t get a chance to grow up experiencing the warmth of a home filled with love.
