PASSIONS: WHY I WRITE
Writing could mean many things to various people; to some it’s a mere profession, an occasional rant in the notes app every few weeks, a passion around which their lifestyle revolves, an academic burden they must tolerate till they’re out of school, it could also be an activist’s act of resistance, or even a weapon for survival. Personally, I relate more with the latter, my love and passion for writing is rooted in a desperation for survival- the dire need to free myself from the buildup of thoughts in my head, writing does that, it buys me the luxury of freedom from things I can’t entirely escape and it builds a home for the beautiful things in my mind that I wouldn’t say right if I tried. Not to mention, there is an immense joy that comes from doing something for the sheer purpose of enjoying it; the simple pleasure to putting random thoughts on paper and making something out of them – a line, a poem, an essay sometimes. Creating something, that’s the beauty of it all!
Not that I’ve only recently picked up writing as a quarantine hobby, but over the past eighteen or so months, it has become a pillar of sorts for me to lean on. Writing has helped me fill the void in my life that came along with these unprecedented times; between getting used to keeping bonds alive over a long distance to coping with spending long days and long nights in silence by myself, my writings have become a place for me to bury the sentiments I worry others might misunderstand- a safe way to blow off steam. Over time, it has become very much like a sanctuary for me, not only has it allowed me room to discover and reinvent myself, it’s undoubtedly a direct portal to my authentic self because everything I write is tied with how I see and experience the world. Being a writer is a very personal endeavor to me, God’s gift to me! And while I’m at it, pursuing my passion, my greatest honor would be to encourage someone – anyone to take up something they love, for there is a gift in you waiting to be unleashed, something special for you to share with the world.
Do tell, what’s something you’re passionate about?
