A LETTER TO MOTHER EARTH

A LETTER TO MOTHER EARTH

Dear Mother Earth,
It’s me again. There is 7 billion of us but you’ve given us all of you without holding anything back; the sky, the sun, the moon, stars, the rain, mountains, hills and valleys, oceans and seas, rainforests and deserts, lakes and rivers, flora and fauna  all in abundance  and most of  all, you’ve given us all a home.

But what have we ungrateful mortals done for you? We’ve cut down all your forests and not even bothered to replace the trees we’ve stolen, we’ve dug your crust in search for oil, diamonds and copper and loosened your soil structure till it crumbed beneath our feet, in our pursuit for wealth and fame, we’ve hunted down and endangered all the fauna and now we wear their skins and applaud each other for the “good work done”, we’ve suffocated a million dozens of fish in the waters with polythene and even gone ahead to pump residual waste into the oceans, we’ve built chimneys, incinerators and puffed cigarettes till we turned the sky into a harbor of poisonous smoke clouds. We’ve discolored you from green to ashy grey. We’ve set you on fire and found pleasure in watching you burn without fear that if you die, we die too but we’ve  refused to take the blame for our actions and bring you back to life  because it is who we are, adamant and ignorant!

Mother Earth, please don’t cry! We’re ready to make you great and green again. We shall plant a hundred more trees for each tree we cut down, and when we go grocery shopping, we promise to use reusable bags and recycle as much as possible. We shall use water and electricity sparingly; turning off electronics devices and lights that are not being used and turning off water taps to minimize wastage. We shall start campaigns and hashtags that’ll nudge the governments into issuing laws that criminalize poaching and the destruction of wetlands. We’ll call out factories that release waste into water bodies and demand immediate action to clean the waters. We are here now to stand up for you and protect you always!
Mother earth, I know we’ll never do just enough to make it up to you but we promise to try and use every day as an opportunity to revive you even in the smallest ways possible.
                                                                                                               With love,
                                                                                              a concerned citizen of earth.
